There Is Room for All of Us.....From a Magazine Owner of 14 Years

Let me say something clearly.

As a magazine owner, I don’t operate from competition.

Not because I’m unaware of other magazines.

Not because I think I’m the only one.

But because I understand my mission.

You can duplicate a format.

You can copy a layout.

You can mimic a style.

But you cannot duplicate purpose.

Size Overrated was built on a very specific foundation, and that foundation is mine.

So when I see other magazines launch, grow, pivot, or evolve, I don’t feel threatened.

I feel respect.

The truth is, especially in the independent magazine world, most publications don’t last very long. It’s not easy. It takes funding, consistency, creativity, resilience, and a thick skin.

To still be here 13–14 years later?

That’s rare.

And I don’t take that lightly.

Longevity in this space isn’t luck.

It’s commitment.

And here’s something people may not know:

Even though I own my own magazine, I’ve shot for other magazines. I’ve done shots for covers. I’ve contributed creatively to other publications.

My work at the top in Fever Magazine

Bottom left my hubby took, bottom right I took and was published in Sheen Magazine. Plus we have work in many other publications.

Why?

Because there is room.

Room for different voices.

Room for different missions.

Room for different aesthetics.

Room for different communities.

Collaboration does not diminish identity.

And supporting someone else’s platform does not weaken your own.

If anything, it strengthens the industry as a whole.

There is no need for envy.

There is no need for comparison.

There is no need for quiet competition.

When your mission is clear, you don’t have to compete.

You just build.

And I hope every independent magazine out there accomplishes what it was created to do.

There is space for all of us.

Always has been.
